Emir Kusturica - The No Smoking Orchestra
On November 29, the Heydar Aliyev Center is to host the legendary Emir Kusturica and his No Smoking Orchestra. The concert’s repertoire abounds with positive and emotional Balkan tunes.
Throughout his performing career, Emir Kusturica succeeded in gaining popularity in a variety of areas. He started as a successful film-maker and a scriptwriter to be then recognized as a gifted musician. His multifaceted talent and diverse activities turned Emir Kusturica into a sort of cultural symbol of the Balkans.
Born in Sarajevo, Emir Kusturica showed a serious interest to arts since his early youth. Missing classes at school ever so often, he was a frequent cinemagoer watching his favorite movies times and again. It was at one of movie theaters in Sarajevo where he finally realized that he wants to associate his life with the magic world of cinema. Kusturica is broadly known for his award-winning movies like Arizona Dream, Underground, White Cat, Black Cat. Two of his movies won the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1999, Emir Kusturica formed The No Smoking Orchestra band which he has been a part of ever since. Kusturica plays guitar in the band. The repertoire of The No Smoking Orchestra is a blend of rock’n’roll, the Balkan punk rock, the Gypsy motifs, the Turkish marches and the Asian tunes. The band always presents remarkable shows with lots of surprise and the audience becoming actively involved in the performance.
